PhD European Label

The European Doctorate refers basically to a label attachable to the PhD degree to be conferred by European Universities, when the following four conditions regarding co-supervision, assessment by an international jury, multilingualism and mobility of the doctoral student have been fulfilled:

  1. The PhD thesis defence will be passed if at least two professors from two higher education institutions of two European countries, other than the one where the thesis is defended, have given their review of the manuscript;
  2. At least one member of the jury should come from a higher education institution in another European country other than the one, where the thesis is defended;
  3. A part of the defence must take place in one of the official languages of the EU, other than the one(s) of the country, where the thesis is defended;
  4.  The thesis must have been prepared in part as a result of a research period of at least six months spent in another European Country.

PhD students who aim, at the end of their PhD course, to obtain the “Doctor Europaeus”, should specify their intention contacting the program Coordinator and the Research Doctorates Office. The appraisals of the two professors from two higher education institutions of two European countries, have to be sent to the Research Doctorates Office and to the Defense Committee. The program Board will appoint at least an external member of the jury from a higher education institution in another European country; the PhD student should defend their PhD thesis in an European official language other than Italian.
According to the condition above, the national and international PhD Office will collect the documentation regarding the periods spent abroad by the candidate.
When all these requirements are fulfilled the national and international PhD Office will confer the title of Doctoral Europaeus to the applicant.
