Recent Publications

Alessandra Gambacurta joined the Department of Experimental Medicine and Biochemical Sciences, University of Rome “Tor Vergata,” originally as a Researcher in 1994, having completed her PhD in Biochemistry in 1992. She is currently an Adjunct Professor for the Chair of Molecular Biology in the Diploma Course in Biomedical Laboratory Diagnostic Techniques. She is also the owner of the Molecular Biology Course of the Biological Chemistry degree and the Medical Engineering Course of Recombinant DNA Techniques at the School of Specialization in Clinical Microbiology and Virology Research. An overview of her interests:
1) Since 1988, expression of eukaryotic genes in heterologous systems by means of Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering, with particular regard to the isolation and characterization of genes of the two haemoglobins of the mollusc Scapharca inaequivalvis and the proteolytic enzyme gene, tryptase;
2) Expression of recombinant human peroxidase (hEPO);
3) Expression of recombinant aspartoacylase-cyclase in relation to the disease Canavan;
4) Since 2003, hematopoietic stem cells and their therapeutic use in veterinary and human hosts, including application of these cells in veterinary medicine, primarily in the treatment of tendon injuries of horses and dogs, which has produced two international patents;
5) Since 2009, interest in cancer stem cells.
